In addition, they all see themselves as plucky underdogs. They acknowledge that systemic disadvantages exist under capitalism, but the brain rot from decades of exposure to individualist, "meritocratic" bootstraps propaganda has convinced them that they alone are disadvantaged. Their egos and ideologies can't survive the idea that they have a leg up.
It's one of their not-very-subtle ways of denying the oppressions and micro aggressions shouldered by minorities. Imagine a tiny boat and a big yacht caught in the same storm and the yacht guy is like "WE'RE ALL EXPERIENCING THE SAME STORM! STOP COMPLAINING!"
