Although the official number of deaths caused by covid-19 is now 7m, our single best estimate is that the actual toll is 27.1m people. We find that there is a 95% chance that the true value lies between 17.9m and 32.9m additional deaths.
How I've managed to be no COVID for 3 years now (sorry I'm such a pedantic asshole) :
- N95 masks absolutely everywhere. I will not unmask around you unless you're also Covid cautious
- No need to convince gf because she's living with long covid
- Put multiple mf'img hepa filters in my classroom.
- Walk outside to eat, like I'm a smoker. I'll eat standing up before eating inside.
- Be such an insufferable tankie that I don't want to hang around libs, go to their parties, do brunches, etc. I went to an outdoor event recently, still masked, and the convo gave me actual psychic damage
- Give non maskers the dirtiest fucking look they've ever got. Sometimes get rewarded with them not sitting next to me on mass transit. Somehow people don't dare to ask me "y u mask?"
final bullet point:
- sheer luck
cause no offense, you seem like you've got a great routine and I'm happy for you but plenty of people just as or more paranoid about covid have gotten it. Esp if you work in a school, that's luck. A lot of it. But you are definitely stacking the odds in your favor too.
I was in the same boat, and finally caught it last month. No matter how cautious we are, it is unfortunately just a matter of time unless you go full hermit.
@WhyEssEff@hexbear.net can we get a :hermit: emote please?
I feel this in my fucking bones. Ever gotten the “My son is scared because you still wear a mask” e-mail? Those are my favorite.
There's a handful of non-white and severely immunocompromised people who still mask, so thankfully not. Also I teach big kids and they're fine.
I've also been covid negative for 3 years now with these carefully curated tricks.
just got mine 24 hours ago. immune response was relatively miserable overnight, which I had forgotten about. achy, chills, etc. feel like a wrung out sponge in the morning, still achy. it sucks, but is easy peasy compared to an actual respiratory infection.
I will get one in the coming weeks its just a bit of a hassle to get one here.
Me, a professor, and her TA are the only three people that I know that still bother to put on a mask. And that professor and TA aren't even American, they're from Europe. Americans by and large just don't care about each and it doesn't bother them that millions of people have and will die plus countless more be permanently disabled just so that they can have their treats.
Totally normal.
When I'm depression procrastinating I go through old meme folders on my phone and the stuff libs and the left were making fun of the right for in 2020 sure didn't age well.
I've gotten my booster recently and will again in 6 months or so, at least.
Anything not behind a paywall?

You can usually put them into archive.org and get behind paywalls like someone else in this thread posted: https://web.archive.org/web/20231019065555/https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/coronavirus-excess-deaths-estimates
I tried using it on
https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB1001020294332922160
Without success. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
WSJ might be weird, but I was able to find a copy on archive.ph: https://archive.ph/sKgDj
Gratzi. For years, I've just kinda ignored everything a paywall rather than doing the right and proper thing (re: 🏴☠️ )
I'll try to stay on the straight and narrow from here on in.
