Destroyed the entire house in the process? I had a stepdad that could most of the time afford people to do the things he wanted done, but chose to do it himself because he considered it ‘his hobby’ and his pride rested on it. Meanwhile he just destroyed the house in the process and made it embarrassing for us cis straight boys to have girls from school over and friends in general.

I still remember kids making fun of my brother and I calling our house trashy and saying we lived in an abandoned house. Lot of resentment built up towards that man that has dissipated over the years as I realize he more than likely has some type of Hoarding disorder or something.

Anyone else grow up in similar situations?

Growing up in a middle class suburb in the Midwest you get judged harshly for shit like this.

If he actually knew how to do these things, I’d applaud him for being frugal and not wasting money like the typical suburban father, but he didn’t know how to do like... any of it and just ended up destroying our house to an embarrassing state

my mother, though not quite a hoarder, buys a lot of random shit, and especially a lot of decorative knick-knacks that create a lot of clutter. eventually it became impossible to keep any room properly clean
