    I always wonder what might've been done better

    I do think it would have been better had China just assumed direct rule in 1997. Not giving anyone any fancy ideas or, for that matter, fattening the pockets of the Hong Kong bourgeoisie and PMC who have always been the real ones screwing their fellow Hong Kongers.
