    I think a lot of our parents just got more benefits, had more to look forward to, just got paid more for less, got more mileage out of their money, and none of the consequences of the lifestyle were ever on the horizon.

    That joke about buying your first house straight up cash from the money you made in one year at your minimum wage job and selling it for a quarter million years later has more than a kernel of truth in it.

    I know someone from my parent's generation who worked retail pharmacy. They became a pharmacist before there was any extended school requirement, and they were making nearly 6 figures a year coasting on that. Now, you would need excellent marks from a great school, do an accelerated 'doctoral'-like program for 3-4 additional years, and make a fraction of that with less benefits and less stability.

    The people from our generation, I don't understand how they do it either. I think a lot of people are just grinding to try to survive, and sadly they have no exposure or access to socialist or communist thought.
