I know people love to turn him into a meme, but it's pretty tone-deaf.

No Humor Allowed crowd really poppin' up these days

Assad memes are not an endorsement of Assad

Not wanting to have interventions in Syria is not an endorsement of Assad

i agree with you $:100-com: but i have seen with my own eye people using assad meme threads to state the quote in OP's image, thought that was more on /r/cth and not on chacha

No, chacha too. You can see it in threads like this one. Granted, they're mostly downvoted, but it's a contrarian, reactionary take that still bubbles to the surface.

Hey I made that thread. And honestly overall I was happy with the discourse that went down. I didn’t really see that much reactionary stuff going on, frankly.

      They kind of are though.

Online discourse isn't capable of handling irony in the long term. If a community does a bit long enough the simplest interpretation of it (in this case ASSAD GOOD) eventually just becomes the unironic consensus opinion.

Go find me someone on this website that says Assad is an anti-imperialist (that isn't banned). OP already linked a post, and no one there called him an anti-Imperialist, or even went further than giving critical support to stave off US imperial meddling. Until you can convince me that somehow this website is full of unironic pro-Assad weirdos, I'm going to keep having fun on a website that spun off of a subreddit that spun off of a podcast dedicated to ironic shitposting
