It's a fucking obvious scam and people not getting it think they're just not too online to get it when NO YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT IT MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE AND YOU DON'T GET IT BECAUSE IT'S A SCAM
Sorry but it gets fucking annoying that everything is turning into collectibles.
oh yeah it's fuckin awesome we reinvented baseball cards, but instead of buying the card you're just buying the certificate of authenticity that comes with the card
And the certificate takes a ridiculous and inexcusable amount of energy to create because the technology is so stupid.
Last week I had the misfortune of listening to the radio for a few minutes and they were talking about the BREAKING NEWS of some NFT that had just sold for a RECORD $67 MILLION.
It obvious that some billionaire tossed some pocket change to his billionaire friend in order to generate "buzz" for their latest scam.
Or just another permutation of art speculation. Truly revolutionizing the art world by repeating the exact same patterns.
Art speculation but with low-effort Ms Paint shit instead of real art.
In an atomized and consumerist society, tribalism and community are sold to dweebs in the form of collectables and exclusivity. The fear of missing out drives the prices higher, and the communities built around the doodads and useless shit are a hierarchy. Your position in the stratus is based solely upon your own commitment to the grift.
It's human nature to want a tribe, and to see yourself as part of something. But we are all extremely atomized, and it's only gotten worse since the rona pulled up to town. Combine that with our worship of tech douchebags or extreme displays of wealth, and NFTs are the next logical step.
At least that's my take on it.
The people talking about NFTs on reddit are really up their own asses and acting like they understand some infinite potential that I'm just too slow to comprehend.
Imo. Its hard for people to understand, even when you lay it out... The future is here. All I hear when I see these arguments is people ~200 years ago.
"why would I trade this piece of paper when I could use gold!!"
People hundreds of years earlier;
"why would I trade this rare stone when I could barter goods!"
We are early to the space. We welcome you with open arms. It is our duty, open minded intellectuals, to continue teaching and helping others learn about moving forward! Some people are so comfortable or content with the way things are tha they cannot even imagine them being different. NFT's solve a ton of issues, and thats only a fraction of what smart contracts are capable of!
Can I use the non-fungus chuck e cheese tokens to buy food?
One of the big ideas among silicon valley neo-libs is pushing the idea of people being able to sell access to their own data. Ultimately it's a scam to undermine any attempts at getting the government to reign in data mining and privacy abuses. I'm pretty sure NFTs are the new way of normalizing that. "Look at all the money to be made selling access to digital information, wouldn't you like to get involved by selling your very own information?"
Ah don't get me started, the spreading of collector culture in music depresses the fuck out of me.
Someone is selling a bridge, and either they think they’re too smart to fall for the trap, or they get in on it to find the next sucker.
Man I'm involved in a pretty niche field of software that's still in its development stages and there are a lot of crypto shills among the pioneering/influential devs in this space. Feels like there's no way to stop it at this point.
I guess at least they're shilling a PoS pyramid scheme coin/platform instead of the more popular ones that use PoW.
Listen to the Trashfutre Ep because they hate it just as much as you.
NFTs have me wondering what actually useful applications of blockchains even exist (beyond just financial transactions). Ethereum is Turing complete, and it's supposed act as a sort of decentralized computing platform. But who would ever want to have to rely on Ethereum for anything important?
If something is very important, that's a good argument for putting it on the blockchain, because it basically can't be messed with. This is the one and only advantage of blockchain over centralized computing, but it's a powerful one. NFTs aren't inherently stupid either, they can represent anything you like not just collectible artist signatures or whatever. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if we ever implement full communism, of the type where the state withers away or is absent to begin with, these consensus algorithms will be needed. If you want a group of people to agree on some rules and have those rules enforced immediately and with absolute certainty, until the group should decide otherwise, this is the technology you need. I'm hoping it will eventually be possible to divorce the idea from the concept of currency/value, I believe it should be possible, but that's technology that doesn't exist yet.
Maybe for a :vote: ing system or something.
Literally the only way I will trust in voting at this point is if I can personally verify that my vote was counted the way I intended.
Even then, media power and the influence of vast fortunes pretty much make it a moot point
