    I remember telling an american lib about residential schools and they handwaved it as "but that was way in the past". Once i brought up that the one that i grew up near closed in the early 90s, it was like hearing a laundry list of excuses. The fuckin gall of these people.

      Yep. And if you suggest making real amends to native americans, anglos will find all sorts of excuses why we shouldn't do that ("that's just impractical!"). So essentially, Americans want forgiveness for the genocide and to move on, but they don't want to do what is the most essential component of forgiveness: making amends.
