never played DnD, am I going to enjoy this game
It's still very rough, I would wait until it's out of early access. Play Divinity: Original Sin 2 instead.
Or Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2, which are kinda sorta supposed to be spiritual successors to Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, and are pretty good
Or just play the originals. Great games (especially the second one) and they hold up pretty well with the enhanced editions that make them work properly on modern computers. Except they use the old 2nd edition ruleset which is full of weird confusing archaic rules (somebody once thought THAC0 was a good idea)
The originals are great. Loved that era of CRPGs. Although I enjoyed BG2's story, Icewind Dale I & II were my favorites because of the copious amounts of great combat and dungeon crawling. They weren't as deep or lore-heavy as the BG series, but they were sooo much fun.
YES! Icewind Dale I & II are my favorite games of all time. They just hit a sweet spot for me. Criminally underrated in my opinion.
I bought dos1: ee a long time ago and now it is time to play it

For an even closer spiritual successor, to me at least, try Pathfinder: Kingmaker. I think it's the ruleset but it's the closest I got to that Baldur's Gate feel with the wave of new cRPGs. Second closest being Pillars of Eternity 2 (which is leagues better than the first one IMO).

feels like shit just want POE with a decent turn-based pause combat system rather than RTWP
Imo Baldur's Gate is good enough to play at least once for the time being. When I played it the game was in an ok state, nothing game breaking happened. Dos2 is really good though, definitely one of the better games I've played recently
I really wanna love DOS2 but I find it infuriatingly difficult. I think I spend more time reloading fights and trying again than I do actually playing the game. When you get into some of the quest flows they're incredibly fun, but the fights just draw me out of it.
just cheese the fights. You can literally sneak up to the very edge of some fights without triggering them (I'm thinking about the Dallis and Alexander fights in particular), teleport the enemies one by one away from the main group and kill them that way. Alternatively, you can cheese most fights with barrels.
Don't forget that most buffs/etc can be applied before you even enter combat, too.
holy shit https://technofaq.org/posts/2015/03/dark-souls-transition-from-full-head-of-hair-to-baldness/
The Baldur's Gate franchise's appeal wasn't really because it was D&D based, it was because it had a really well-written story and characters. If Baldur's Gate 3 is good it won't be because of the gameplay, it'll be because it was well-written, and there's no way to tell that yet.
