“Socialism is when the government does stuff. And it's more socialism the more stuff it does. And if it does a real lot of stuff, it's communism.”

Richard D. Wolff, born on this day in 1942, is a Marxist economist and author known for co-founding Democracy at Work and hosting Economic Update, a weekly series which discusses political and economic issues from a Marxist perspective.

Wolff is also Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amhers and currently a Visiting Professor in the Graduate Program in International Affairs of the New School University in New York.

In 1988, Wolff co-founded "Rethinking Marxism", a still running academic journal dedicated to Marxist analyses of economics, culture, and society. Among his other works are "Capitalism Hits the Fan" (2009) and "Democracy at Work: A Cure for Capitalism".

The New York Times dubbed Wolff "America's most prominent Marxist economist", and he is featured regularly in television, print, and internet media.

I don't have any actual useful input on the topic, but Wolff's talks are definitely "babby's first socialism" if I've ever heard it, and it's great for mildly left libs and socdems to start to think beyond liberalism and toward some sort of actual economic reform. I don't think he's going to be a "Stalin did nothing wrong" memer or log on and debunk anti-PRC propaganda all day or anything, but I absolutely get the impression that he has a far deeper understanding that "WOEs == socialism, vote Sanders/Corbyn", so it's annoying for people to log on and call him a lib/socdem idiot which I've seen here and there.

He is very much someone who is leveraging his incidental clout and playing the game a bit to get the message out there. Very good example of pipelining if you compare his cable news messaging to his lectures as well as who he surrounds himself with

I don't have the time stamp but he had a chat with Marxist Paul a few weeks ago and talked about some of his upcoming projects, one of which he hinted pretty hard was an interview with Dr Wolff. I think it was towards the end of the stream
