Ya'll think you can suck academia's dick by "interpreting genocide via a critical lens" but like...that's fucking stupid. A critical lens isn't an "interesting way of discussing the ramifications of an idea" it's actually about arbitrarily taking that idea out of real world context. This is just liberal media criticism. The characters in a story aren't real and don't have a real profit motive because they're not real. The people who produce, distribute and advocate for that story are real and have a real profit motive and that profit motive is at odds with human rights.

Fuck your interpretations. Academia is designed to destroy context and invent fake demand for intersectionality. If you don't "yes and" the echo-chamber like elements of academia, you don't need intersectionality.

  • What you’re describing is a single facet of bottom-level sorting on social media

"I dont have friends who will retweet something for me"

You realize thats how social media actually works? It's not ranting into the abyss, its social engineering virality with organization OUTSIDE OF SOCIAL MEDIA. There hasn't been organic virality since instagram was consumed by facebook. The social-engineering around your one "bottom-level" factoid about how social media MIGHT work is literally just "I don't want to organize but think I should still get credit for being a leftist".

You're reading books by fail-sons about the theory of why capitalism has historically been attacking workers. I'm doing the thing I believe in. I'm here attacking capitalism because its attacking us.

People pretend they're "above social media" but really they're just surrendering it to capitalism. If we all tweet 10 anticapitalist things a day with any kind of entertainment value and trendy pop culture references, it'll add up over time and thats how things get solved. Work done over long periods of time. Theory never helped a worker get a damn thing. We pretend we'd pick up a hammer and protect the line when company gun thugs tried to break the union but we're actually just a bunch of kids so scared of twitter that we formed a rightwing-themed leftist circle jerk.

  • Workers rights and anticapitalism. Academia convinced you internationalism and ethics are real. Stop trying to use context-dependent logic and rule sets. That is how industrialization works. It makes it so you're a lawyer and only lawyers understand law issues so only they can weigh on the morals of our industry. And then they gutted our country with private equity.

There is only one issue. Stop letting them frame the discussion. It's just another version of "class-blind identity politics". If stupidpol is just a rightwing hellscape of political messages being promoted by corporate interests then stop fucking reading it and stop fucking posting it other places. You don't make shit go away by spreading it.

Be better than stupidpol loud enough and it stops existing. Thats how social media works.

  • It’s the fuckers who wear an Obama t-shirt,

You're angry about a guy wearing a T shirt instead of being mad about rightwing media oligarchs buying up the entire political/pop culture landscape and framing the overton window as center-right (liberal) and far right (alex jones). We let center-right economics become the center because we stopped calling it "center-right".

Mitt Romney is a liberal. He is center right. Bill Clinton is a liberal. He is center right. We let them rebrand center-right economics + performative leftism as something new, liberalism and thats how its become the center.

    twitter’s top news story

You realize what you're doing right here is why its the top story. I know it feels like you're "raising awareness" that there's shit on twitter but you're actually just smearing that shit all over our forum.

We do not actually have to read for-profit journalism because its the only stuff popular. Stop following the algorithm and start leading it. Post things you want more of and their will be more of it.

You read an article because twitter told you to and then you reposted it and you found a way to still feel like you're opposing twitter.

  • And "green capitalism" is the fake worldview being put forth by fake candidates like Joe Kennedy. Joe Kennedy's top donor is Mitt Romney (Bain Capital).

Your "green capitalists" and "Green dems" are rightwing republicans and because you're using identity politics instead of human names, you accidentally did a liberalism. Do not accept academia's premise that it must have value and you must use what it taught you. Everything we learned in college was on behalf of the capitalist donors of the school we went to.

Before academia we knew that only people were responsible for the actions of people. After academia we have people like you trying to solve a crisis by blaming a color. Academia and citizens united are two edges of the same sword: Corporate Personhood. corporations aren't real, only people are.

politics happens on www.opensecrets.org not cspan.

edit: didn't actually answer the question. I think he's credible, but he's still a boomer lol.

It's a decent book and I don't think Russ is a shill or anything but I'm not sure the book is all that "useful" or "important". Part of the problem with the way we talk about politics is that its politician-centric as opposed to donor-centric.

Hell, we're so brain-washed by capitalism that we call this "corporate influence" and "big business". Corporate personhood worked so fucking well that we think that non-person corporate entities actually do things. Only people can actually do stuff. The Bush family fucking sucks but the fact that they are in the spotlight almost disqualifies them from being decision-makers. I think HW might have been an oligarch but that family just ain't it anymore.

I would love to see Russ Bakers take on some our most powerful modern villains and media oligarchs like John Malone, Charles Koch, Stan Kroenke and James Cox. They own the media empires that create, maintain and shift the overton window to keep capitalism in place.
