In this modern era you can get a serviceable dehydrator for pretty cheap too. Drying out all the produce that I don't get around to eating before it goes bad has done a lot to stretch my budget and gives me some flexibility with recipes and such. Plus it's the easiest laziest way to preserve food

I think LARPing the apocalypse is an excellent hobby which hones many useful skills as long as one doesn't fall into paranoia or unrealistic expectations for what the future may hold. Being a nerd about stuff like food preservation, foraging, amateur radio, land nav, etc. is cool and good imo
