  • Agreed, tho I'm definitely an anxious nutter alphys-anxious

I'm just shocked that even these highly educated PMC people who work in the field and are generally interested in research are going buck wild maskless this Christmas. I guess one of them just got sick (non-Covid) now while on vacation. In the beginning of Death Panel's Covid Year Four episode they summed it up pretty well calling it the 'sociological production of the end of the pandemic'.

  • I finally got it. After 3 years of avoiding it, working in an office job with very minimal contact with coworkers, masking religiously in public, and tracking my county's data and adjusting how much I'm socializing based on that data, etc. I honestly don't know how I got it, I've been more cautious this past month and none of my other friends/family had it or were symptomatic. Luckily it's been 'mild' for me, but the first couple days were still pretty hellish. It's been 3 weeks and luckily all I have left is brain fog which is getting better and should resolve in 90 days according to my pcp (jesus christ that's a long time). The long covid studies and the permanent brain fog really scares the shit out of me compared to the other stuff since i have a bunch of dementia/alzheimers in the family, but obvs it's all pretty alarming. Solidarity and love to the folks this has disabled and killed, if this eventually disables me I'm going to [REDACTED] an elected official.

We have east coast family visiting and among them are multiple doctors and libs who believe in climate change that call themselves "progressive". Whenever I mention any new study on long covid I am made to feel like an annoying shut-in who believes in chem trails. I don't even get into the details of the study, just the mention of the article title is enough to make these "trust the science" types imply that I'm spending too much time online and blowing things out of proportion. These people are great and smart and accepting in many other ways, but holy fuck. They are fucking DONE trusting the science. I honestly don't know what it's going to take, maybe one of them or their kids getting long covid and suffering before they'll actually shut the fuck up and start "trusting the science" again?? Like I know the media has been normalizing this for years so this is expected but like you'd think people with fucking MDs would be able to see through the media bias, denialism and normalization of this. guess not. it's literally fine doomjak

    Great write up!

For some of our homebody comrades, those super short on time, or those who can't afford a gym consistently, I'd highly recommend going with 1 or 2 kettlebells, at least as another option to start out or if you don't have access to a full gym. Due to their shape, the variety of exercises they provide give you the ability to hit just about every part of your body with a single piece of equipment.

I've been lifting for years and can't believe I haven't tried them sooner. They are literally so fucking fun; like, the concept of having fun WHILE working out is so foreign to me...usually I like the DOMS feeling after lifting, but don't get a whole lot of enjoyment while I'm working out other than the pump and the music. With kettlebells that's different, it's this awesome flow. Been doing kb sport style and am obsessed. It's actually got me excited about lifting again since I started like 10 years ago.

Anyway, I'd recommend a minimum of 1 or 2 KBs (one "lightweight", one "heavyweight" - these are relative to your strength), around 8kg - 12kg for beginners (adjustable ones exist too), and foam flooring (those puzzle mats at 1/2 inch thickness are fine). That's it. I workout barefoot lol. There are plenty of form and intro tutorial videos on youtube, and you can post form checks to :reddit-logo: /r/kettlebell. At the moment that community is super chill, supportive and chud free as far as I've seen. I personally use a competition kettlebell and am working to get a fancy adjustable one, but they're not necessary. For guidance and workouts I use Lebe Stark videos and Joe Daniel's program, which overlap in a lot of ways, though the former is kbsport style. Lebe Stark has hundreds of workout classes he put out for free, so I don't really do anything for programming, other than my plan of gradually moving up in weight.

I'm still a kb beginner but me know if you have any other questions. They've been amazing for me during this covid hellscape and I hope they can help my comrades too

Totally. To the extent that we need to win over conservatives around us in our lives, yes absolutely. But in a public anonymous online forum that isn’t suited to a thoughtful and targeted approach? You might be able to make some headway but it’ll probably take an enormous amount of time and effort. And that’s in a subr*ddit that’s not openly hostile to your ideas

  • If anyone’s interested, Noel Kent’s Islands Under the Influence is like one of the only books about Hawaii’s political economy - from first contact (Cook) all the way through the current tourist hellhole it now is. I’m about 3/4 thru and it’s excellent, relatively short and pretty easy to read. It’s explicitly Marxist and really cuts through some of the :LIB: narratives that pervaid Hawaii’s history. I highly recommend it

    • podcasts
    • barely talking at work unless spoken to
    • funneling everything through email as much as I can
    • saying yes to most requests but maintaining the veneer of insane busyness so that I’m still considered a team player but no one outside my inner circle of coworkers asks me for things
    • sublimating the alienation by working out and getting outside on the weekend
    • do a praxis or an artsy thing

  • shin splints and squat PT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSYrcj4rfF8&t=240s probably not the best out there, but is working for me now

full squat mobility routine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqF90pMpjb4 they have a list of exercises at the end if you want to printout

I'm probably gonna check this one out soon and add to my list- supplemental squat warmup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZlmSNrMBP8

Let me know if you all have other warmup routines for squats. If anything it's taught me I need to 1) start very slow and 2) actively strengthen AND warmup my ankles and shins every time if I want to progress.

  • Made some big progress last couple weeks on my squat. Found some PT videos involving bands targeting my weak shins, and follow a 20 min warmup that opens up hips and stretches all parts of my ankle. Now no pain when I go heavy! I’ve stagnated for years so I’m just surprised that I was able to progress instead of settling with never doing squats again

Diet is on point right now honestly. Every meal has been protein + veg or protein + fruit, BUT NEED MORE IDEAS.
