  • Damn thanks for this answer. Yeah I really really want to go with Xiaomi, but that was my worry, that it’d be difficult to get working in the US. I’ve been researching people who have been able to use it in the us, but being that I sort of just need a phone at this point since this one is pretty much dead, I don’t really have the time to figure all that out.

Unfortunately I think I am in the end going to stay with Apple. One of my main issues with the 15 was that I found the screen very difficult to look at, even with low brightness. After poking around online it seems there are other people who have this issue, and it seems to have something to do with an OLED screen vs the lcd screen I have now. Apple does still have phones with an lcd screen (the se) so I think I’m just going to do with that.

However oneplus is also recommended for people with issues with OLED so I think right now I’m just going to stay in the Apple ecosystem, and then just try to be proactive about keeping my tech updated next time so I’m not trying to replace my phone when it’s pretty much broken, and probably go with oneplus. I’d prefer a Chinese phone anyway. Staying with Apple rn is just easier for my situation though.

  • See I think this is what I mean. Like in the past the word “arson” has meant, to me, for example someone burning down another person’s house intentionally and maliciously. And I think a lot of people have the same understanding. And so I think a lot people hear the word arson linked to wildfire, and they picture people going out to the woods with the malicious intention to start large forest fires. And so it’s easier to accept the right-wing conspiracy of soros-funded arsonists intentionally starting fires to then blame on climate change.

The way you frame it makes it seem more like it’s farmers who, while the burning is illegal, are engaging in a generations old practice with no intention to start a huge forest fire. At least in Spain’s case. Which I think is a completely different situation than what most people (or at least us Americans) picture when they hear arson.

  • It’s absolutely a muddying of the waters. But I’d like to be exacting in my criticism of those people. Since I can see a situation in which climate change creates the conditions (drier, hotter, drought, more wind etc) that cause human-started fires to grow larger and out of control. When folks start to talk about “arson” in relation to wildfires, is there any truth to it and I just have too narrow a definition of arson, or is it purely just a muddying of the waters?

  • I think The Band are one of my favorite bands of all time so definitely them. Big Pink, self-titled and of course their live concert The Last Waltz are the staples for them.

But I’m not listening to anything too obscure. Neil Young, Bob Dylan. A lot of people have a strong opinion on Dylan but imo Highway 61 is a perfect album, and one of Huey Newton’s favorite albums in fact.

The Byrds, Van Morrison. The Grateful Dead do some folky stuff, especially on Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty. Also if you want obscure check out their pre-Dead jug revival band Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions.

Buffy Ste Marie is one of my favorite musicians of all time. Sweet America is good by her. There was some controversy with her earlier in the year calling into question her claim to Native American ancestry. It was mostly reactionary bullshit iirc. She also has an album called Illuminations which has been praised retroactively for being a very forward looking electronic album. There’s also Judy Collins and Joni Mitchell, and more traditional folk revival stuff, like Dave Van Ronk and Odetta.

  • Dad rock. Used to listen to solely classic rock in middle school since that was the only real music, then I grew out of that attitude and started enjoying other types of music. Now I’m returning to some of those old classics and I have a new appreciation for them with a greater understanding of the musical landscape.

Though by dad rock I mostly mean 60s folk rock. Guess that’s not the stereotypical dad rock, which is usually more hard rock oriented
