Romani people are not Romanians. Roma are an originally nomadic minority that comes from India.

Yeah but these days they're based in Romania. It's where they're "from" DNA tying them to India notwithstanding.

No they're not. They never were supposed to be from Romania and no one ever thought they were. The word doesn't even have anything to do with Romania, it comes from Rom, which I believe means "person" in their language, whereas Romania comes from Rome. Roma is the correct name, but it wasn't used widely by other people until pretty recently. People called them gypsies and variations of that word, which comes from "Egyptian", since people thought they came from Egypt.

Is this a joke? In case it is not, there is no "back home to Romania". Romania is not their home (well except for the ones who do happen to live in Romania). No one thinks it is. In Europe, they're not immigrants "from" somewhere in general, they've usually lived in the countries they currently live in for centuries. Sometimes just like everyone, they emigrate to other countries. In that case if they are deported, it is back home to wherever they were just before, which is not (in general) Romania unless, again, they happened to be from Romania. Once again, they have nothing to do with Romania. The correct name for them (which wasn't even used by the majority of non-romani people) just happens to be similar to the name of the country, and the country happens to have a significant (though not the largest) population of Romani people, just like the rest of the Balkans pretty much.
