I thought the V-22 was really cool when I was 10 because "what if a helicopter turned into an airplane" is a funny idea for a 10 year old. Now I think it's really cool because "what if an aircraft was over designed and it's really only good for " is a really funny idea.
When I was a little kid, my dad built a model of the Osprey and I thought it looked really cool. This was probably about 30 years ago, so the Osprey wasn't even in use yet, or at the very least the model had originally been released before it was in use. They really did design this machine to sell toys.
Lego also tried releasing a model of a ”rescue” Osprey, but cancelled it because it went against their principle to make sets based on modern military vehicles, since there are no civilian Ospreys IRL. I kind of wonder if that was a ploy to stealthily get into making military toys. ”No, this is a rescue F-35.”
