I watched it recently for the first time and didn't like it until I watched End of Evangelion. I love it now.
That said, it's not super intellectual but I liked the angle taken for the show with it being less action focused and more character focused (I'm not an action fan). If I watched evangelion in my teens I would be so annoying.
But it has action in like every episode? I feel you though, I was already an annoying teen but I might have been worse.
I kinda refuse to watch more of that franchise though. I read the synopsis of End of Evangelion once I finished the show and it was still fresh but I wasn't impressed enough to want to spend more time on it.
The first half was monster of the week style, which bored me to hell and I was ready to drop, before it moved more into plot. So there was enough non action for me to grab onto and stay.
It was the visuals/sound of End of evangelion that reeled me in too.
