i guess it kind of is a fetish thing. talking heel & toeless there was an original sports purpose ?maybe baseball? and they were designed to fit on top another sock. i don't really understand why. then its become a certain fashion thing to wear without an undersock.
again like a fingerless glove i assume there's innocent utility there too.

Good way to destroy them. I have 11.5 wide feet and they chew through socks like crazy. Any little hole gets ripped to shreds.
Nobody sees the heel most of the time and it probably takes a penny or two off dye costs
