I've heard a few people sing their praises, and a few say that they're not worth it. Some cost $80, some are $400, but I don't really know what makes one better than the other, or either of them better than a $20 glass pipe.

Sometimes if I'm smoking every day I'll develop a cough, so I'm guessing that it's not that great for my lungs. Would a vaporizer be better?

i used to have a pax and it was ok, a little tough to get good hits off. there's a few people in this thread claiming it's straight up better for you... i understand why people think that, and it may be true but it's my impression it's not exactly an empirically backed claim just yet because vaping is so new. it seems fair to assume vaping dry herb at low temps would be less bad than smoking, but especially when it comes to like, gas station pods and shit, who the fuck knows what the long term effects of that are? nobody, i think. i know that's tangential to your post. personally vaping weed in any form has always felt harsher on my lungs than a joint. i prefer joints for other reasons too though.

I've tried those vape pens that use a cartridge of hash oil and they irritated my lungs more than smoking a pipe

yeah those are killer on the lungs. i've smoked for years and never felt like my lungs were so harshly rejecting something as with those. can't possibly be any better for you than a joint.
