I'm collaborating with a colleague on a team project to make a video and they just a bought brand new fancy $$$$$ laptop (apple) they had to connect a big clunky adapter to connect a fucking thumb drive because they don't come with USB ports anymore.
at some point with the constant reduction of default capabilities (with zero savings passed on to the consumer and no increase in value going to labor), even the most committed Duplo fan is going to see they they are getting played... right?
Apple computers don't come with standard USB ports now? Holy moly. That's so unusable.
Their users like that though. It's the feeling of being ruled by a benevolent dictator who has only your best interests at heart. Trust the educated! It's always worked.
The laptops don’t the desktops still do. One of my coworkers has one bc for better or worse apple is the industry standard in my industry, and it’s obnoxious how many converters he has to use lol.
Yeah, I get it. "Oh, you still use those stinky old USB types? We don't any more. We have Apple, the best. I only use the finest accessories, thus proving I'm a high status person."
For us it’s pretty silly bc it would require a lot of upgrading tons of hardware. But yeah he has this giant hunk of metal hanging on his laptop so he can plug in all the gear we use lol
Uhhh they definitely come with USB ports, they're just USB-C now which is the newest form-factor and can do a lot more cool stuff than the older ones. It will just be a bit before everything uses USB-C but there are probably plenty of USB-C flash drives.
Its been what? 3 years? I'm not seeing widespread adoption for usb C by default.
Its already a pain to grab a flash drive that will work on a mac when you usually use Linux/windows.
USB-C adoption will only increase. It always takes years before a standard is widespread. Most Android phones use it, there's an iPad that uses it. I assume most new laptop models have it. Headphones have it. You can find a USB-C version of more and more peripherals. Basically whenever you buy a new device just make sure it has USB-C. And it will be a much longer-lasting standard than micro USB or others. It can be used for graphics (ie replace HDMI), analog audio, charging and charging negotiation, etc. So it can replace a lot of other things.
I'm aware it can be used for a lot, my monitor is currently plugged in via USB C to display port.
I guess what I want to say is, its fucking idiotic to have only USB-C. Its been over three years and I'm still seeing people lug around adapters, which means it was a failure of design to ditch the old style all together.
It could have been half and half, or maybe just one idk.
Sometimes they have to just bite the bullet but I'm sure cost-cutting is still a big part of it.
I didn't question her assessment of her own laptop, but I did watch her hook up some absurd firewire to USB adapter to connect the flash drive and copy files.
maybe you just haven't seen the latest and greatest innoventation of Apple!
usb-a devices are still the vast, vast majority of all USB devices. they should include both kinds of ports
They'd probably have to make the laptop thicker in that situation, which I guess they didn't want to do. Most thin laptops have already gotten rid of ethernet ports so USB-A ports are fair game.
My X1 carbon is about the same thickness as a Macbook pro and it has full size USB.
Ever remove a glued in, inflated battery out of a laptop? Its awful.
in my experience, as someone who used to service computers professionally, apple users have never serviced their own shit and they invariably take it to a "genius bar" (lmao) where the overworked psycho brand loyalist can sell them some shit. it's like taking your 20 year old civic to the honda dealership because the handle for your door broke and the mechanic "must" sell you a whole new door for $900. or you take it to the offbrand guy at Joe Blow's Auto who can hook it up by only replacing the part that is actually broken for $50.
which like, hey, i get it. capitalism gonna capitalism. but jesus christ, so many of them think they are the clever consumer for dropping 5x the price on a fashion accessory that they don't even know how maintain.
I don't buy it. Laptops have had fold-out Ethernet ports for half a decade now, and you can have a USB port that's as thin as the internal "tongue" of the female USB connector if you don't mind the fat side of the male connector floating out there and an extra circuit to avoid connecting power to data if you brush something conductive.
Those people can just not use the USB A port and carry around an adapter for the USB C port.
But that non-standard design is the absolute lower limit, at just under 3/32". People have stuck USB A ports on business cards.
If your laptop is thicker than 3/16", there's no excuse for not having a standard USB A port.
A standard USB A port is 4.5 mm, or just under 3/16". If your laptop is thicker than 3/16", you can fit a USB A port.
The tongue of a USB A port, which can be inserted into a male USB A connector is just under 3/32. Non-standard implementations have literally just been the tongue sticking out, though I've never seen it in a laptop.
Honestly, I’d be okay with the hyperthin laptop with breakout boxes. That said the breakout boxes suck. They should be built to be part of the laptop and have ALL THE PORTS, but sometimes, you only need the main laptop.
Apple hates you . That's why you have to charge their mouse from the bottom.

I have a
2012mac that I've been waiting to die for years now so I can switch back to a pc.Edit: just checked it is a 2011
I had a 2013 model and it had the gpu fail back in like 2016 or so, but apple replaced it, same thing happened a year or so ago and I went back to pc. Since I bought “premium” went from “a bit too much but it’s nice to have in my industry since everyone has macs” to, “nah fuck it, I could buy a machine 4x as powerful for less”
Yeah my battery needs replacing but I'm able to plug in most the time so I'm waiting for it to get bad enough and see where that puts me.
Or if I get this new job I may be able to have them buy me a new PC if they're half-remote like they're talking.
I will def come back to you if I can't figure it out. Lol
i got a iphone 7. no aux slot. i had already generally fucking disliked apple before this but that was the last straw
FUCK APPLE IF YOU BUY APPLE SHIT EVEN THO THERES OTHER OPTIONS YOU FUCK TOO
Are you telling me that you don't want to disassemble the entire computer just to have a chance at cleaning the keyboard?
I think those are actually a bit easier to pull the caps off of than the old butterflies. I had to clean out my m1 down arrow, and it wasnt too bad. There are clips at the top that youve gotta be careful about, but it's more of a pain than it is impossible anymore
my work computer is in the shop now as this happened to me this week. they're replacing the whole bottom case, including the expanded battery that has 30 seconds of life left and won't let the laptop sit flat. if anyone has a MacBook 2016-2019 with the crap keyboard, it is under recall for four years after purchase date, so mine was free to repair. just say your keyboard is broken at the apple store and the whole bottom half will get replaced, including little rubber blockers under all the keys. good luck
