Nah I completely agree. I read like half the series and don't want to finish it because it's kinda depressing to read about The Culture knowing I won't ever live in such a society. I can watch Star Trek because the Federation most of the time feels like modern day US but in space while The Culture feels way more real because it's so fundamentally different from our society and the author pays attention to the details.
same reason why i've been very, very slowly reading the series. kind of savoring it. and you are right about the details. The Federation is absolutely post-scarcity hyper social democracy U.S. in space sometimes. i wish it was more based.
