So many things to unpack here I don’t even know where to get started.

The unelected French government wouldn't allow Le Pen to do anything real anyway. The elected governments stay for a few years but the bureaucracy will outlast them. Those people are in office for 30-40 years and have weathered many storms and know exactly how to cut the tendons of the beast.

I mean the French senate is chewing on individual liberties as we speak. Macron's government, elected or unelected, is already doing "real" things. I don't want to be that guy who says "they said the same thing about Hitler", but they did say the same thing about Hitler. Comparing Le Pen to the NSDAP seems far fetched but her party was co-founded by an actual SS. I don't mean to say that France is necessarily going to become a full on dystopian fascist regime if Le Pen is elected, but we should definitely not underestimate the damage RN can do.

The UK unelected government was saying the same thing right before it was a real possibility Corbyn would be elected - "don't worry, we've got it under control, we won't let him do anything."

We have to realize just how little power the elected government has in this day and age.
