Source is Israeli media.

They blame Hamas, stating they tricked people into running, while they themselves stood still, knowing that IDF would mistake the running crowds for Hamas.

knowing that IDF would mistake the running crowds for Hamas.

Hamas tricked us by knowing we're colossal morons who would happily shoot crowds of people running from what we describe as a terrorist attack

Israel doing its own 9/11 while blaming the party it funded so that it could kill more of the hostages it let them take is chefs-kiss . So many layers to this cosmic display of dumbassery.

Did this story get picked up anywhere?

edit: the story is apparently from October 15th but it does align with what the survivors were saying at the time

Why are they even posting this? The disregard they show for their own people is staggering. At this point Hamas can shout Boo and kill more people than any rocket. They have learned the Weirding ways.

After the pilots realized that there was tremendous difficulty in distinguishing within the occupied outposts and settlements who was a terrorist and who was a soldier or civilian, a decision was made that the first mission of the combat helicopters and the armed Zik drones was to stop the flow of terrorists and the murderous mob that poured into Israeli territory through the gaps in the fence. 28 combat helicopters fired over the course of a day The fighting all the ammunition in their stomachs, in rearming rounds. These are hundreds of 30 mm cannon shells (the effect of a spray grenade for each shell) as well as the Hellfire missiles. The rate of fire against the thousands of terrorists was tremendous at first, and only at a certain point did the pilots begin to slow down the attacks and carefully select the targets.

The Hamas army, it turns out, deliberately made it difficult for the helicopter pilots and the operators of the UAVs: in the investigation it became clear that the invading forces were asked in the last briefings to walk slowly into the settlements and outposts or within them, and under no circumstances to run, in order to make the pilots think they were Israelis. This deception worked for a considerable time , until the Apache pilots realized that they had to skip all the restrictions. It was only around 9:00 a.m. that some of them began to spray the terrorists with the cannons on their own, without authorization from superiors.

"Look, we may have killed hundreds of our own civilians, but only because we always err on the side of shooting unarmed and fleeing targets, and since everyone knows that, it means Hamas tricked us presumably, by showing basic discipline and not panicking."

Not exactly the best defense tbh.

Nope, fleeing enemies are valid targets. It's attacking surrendering enemies that's a war crime.

why wouldn't you? They will kill you tomorrow if you don't kill them today. They're not running or retreating because they are scared, but because they feel they will lose to you now and want to flee before you've won so they can keep attacking. Unless they surrender, you keep going until they're done. It's awful, dreadful, inhumane, but it's war and it's what you have to do to survive.

not mutually exclusive tbh. Especially if you're under the impression that surrendering will lead to you being tortured until you wish you were dead.

I guess that is true, but from a tactical standpoint you have to assume they are doing it to achieve an objective.

:armchair-general: i'm not sure how you'd be expected to distinguish that from setting up a flank or other tactical maneuver? the general case isn't a texan shooting a kid running down the block

I wonder how many people the IDF indiscriminately killed have been officially "kidnapped" by Hamas

Hamas replied with "IDF season" whenever I declared that it was Hamas season, before reversing it and saying it was Hamas season so that I would be tricked into saying "IDF season" and get my bill blown away with a hunting rifle.
