Another +1 for OpenShot. Kdenlive may also work, but honestly they're pretty crashy in general and proprietary software is the name of the game for video editing - even with excellent backends like ffmpeg.
You should be able to use Blender too for video editing but I also feel like that may have been removed in current releases.
Not sure what functionalities OpenShot, Pitivi, and Kdenlive have, but I got the impression they were more for editing footage. Is there specific software for making animated infographic-y stuff or do any of these cover that well enough?
Kdenlive I know has the capability to make something like op, I would guess openshot does too, but I haven't used it so I can't say. Blender's video editor is subpar, but it does integrate very well into the rest of blender for 3d effects, and the blender foundation is apparently working on an update to the editor that should come out in the next year or so.

Unfortunately I’m not an AV guy so I can’t say for sure, but maybe hacking around with Blender could work?

Blender has a functional video editor, and the 3d viewport/2d grease pencils is amazing for doing quick animations.
