i can kind of understand the childfree people because there's social pressure to have kids and have a "normal" life path (even though i think the sub in general is weird) but the dog free and pet free subs are just so weird. like, this is very much a non-issue. pets aren't that ubiquitous and i live in one of the countries with the most pets worldwide lol

they hold a bigger grudge against a pet species than i hold against actual people who have wronged me. it's insane.

yeah, it's fine not to like dogs, especially if you've never lived with any they can seem very intimidating. spending your free time asserting how much you don't like dogs with your fellow dog-hating friends is absolutely insane though. why would you spend so much time complaining about something instead of talking about and interacting with things that give you joy?
i guess some of that sub has unresolved trauma with dogs and this is a way of coping, but it's still so weird looking from the outside.

my stepfather had a horrible boxer dog that he’d mistreat to make it attack me when I was about 5. He did this when my mum was out and he was in a particularly sadistic mood. I remember very fucking clearly how he would laugh at me being cornered, mauled and bitten by an angry dog. Then he’d tell my mum I was teasing it and attacking it and thats why I was crying under the kitchen table, cradling my bleeding arm. She never fucking questioned this.

Anyway yeah I have trauma from dogs and even I think those people are fucking mental. Then again, I also get very mad at people who own pugs and bulldogs, so maybe my natural fucking empathy for living beings is too strong to be that much of a psychopath.

damn, i'm so very sorry you had to go through that. i can't even imagine how scary that must have been. :Care-Comrade: you should be very proud you've become a better person than you were raised to be and breaking the cycle of abuse. i respect that quite a bit.

i'm wary of dogs i don't know too well even though i've never been attacked too bad before. they also almost universally seem to not like me at first so there's that too.
the pure breed fixation society seems to have is weird as fuck and probably telling of how people view the concept of race. at the same time i don't really judge people who only get pure-breed dogs (even if they are inhumane like pugs) too harshly because it's something that's very normalized and seen as a status symbol. i feel like that's changing quickly though, hopefully i'm right.

I had like ten more years of his abuse to go after that unfortunately but thank you. I worked very hard to be absolutely nothing like him. Unfortunately my mother continued her preference for abusive men and immediately began dating another abusive fucker - and let me tell you, it’s really fucking depressing and tbh utterly devastating when your mother has two explicit chances to choose you over her abusive partner and chooses the partner both times over you and probably a large part of why I’ve spent a decade addicted to opioids tbh but anyway moving on before I start down that path - but yeah, I’m incredibly wary of all dogs, even on the street because of that.

I get what you’re saying about the pure breed fixation being normalised but I make an exception for pugs because a) the owners tend to get them because “cute squishy faces!” and b) it’s literally impossible to own one without knowing their entire existence is miserable. They can’t breathe, and thus “playing” for them is actually torture and they will lie down for ages to try and get their breath back, they “reverse sneeze” because they literally don’t have enough space in their skull to sneeze properly and this causes their eyes to pop out of their sockets nine times out of ten, they live roughly 20 years less than they should because their bodies literally can’t handle their existence for longer than roughly 5 years, the “cute noises” they make (snorts and snuffles) are literally them struggling to breathe and if they have to undergo an operation or similar at the vets and have to have a tube down their throat supplying oxygen while they’re sedated, they don’t panic and choke like other dogs when they wake up - they literally just lie there because it’s the first time they’ve ever been able to breathe properly and some pugs have been known to pretend to be asleep again to keep the tube in so they can breathe for longer. So yeah I have strong opinions on pugs and truly believe anyone who owns one can go fuck themselves. Oh and most of them can’t give birth naturally anymore because they’ve been bred too small to handle it, so they have to have a complicated C-section which has a low survival rate for their puppies.

So seriously fuck anyone who owns a pug. They know how miserable their pet is and they just don’t fucking care. I really hope people are changing but I’m not hopeful. They don’t want “retromops” (pugs that have been bred to be healthier and more like they used to be before we fucked them up) because their faces aren’t squished and they’re not small and cute.

Do you know who had a dog? That's right, Adolf Hitler. People who hate dogs are objectively worse than Hitler. :comrade-doggo:
