They want unity, but unity that rallies around radical centrism and/or the neoliberal order. Anything outside of that is bad because it "disunites" people.

At this point, it would honestly be better for the US gov to just give all these companies a huge payout and own the patent. If you're really not willing to bypass patent, just fucking buy the patent and then open it up. If you really need unity, that would be the thing to do, but they're too cowardly to even set that precedent in a once-in-a-century global crisis.
