    It used to have a mechanic called "the economy", where all of a sudden your dwarves would earn wages, pay rent, and buy food/drink. In almost every fort it completely borked otherwise smooth operations, and the only way to prevent it from instantly turning half of your dwarves homeless was to intentionally make shitty rooms so that your lower-skill laborours could make rent.

    Toady cut it out of the game because it sucked.

      The DF economy fell apart because dwarves spent all their time moving currency around. It didn't even have time to fall apart due to the flaws of capitalism.

      Actually, the flaws in the dwarven economy are kind of like blockchain.

        you're not wrong, but I like the retelling that implies that the experience of trying to simulate a capitalist economy radicalized the developer.
