"We oppose US-backed war crimes and the continuing apartheid, including the ongoing bombing in Gaza and evictions in Jerusalem and the West Bank."
I haven't heard Toady speak politically before so that's unexpected.
The fact that it's basically communism with resources shared equally between dwarfs was a bit of a tell
It used to have a mechanic called "the economy", where all of a sudden your dwarves would earn wages, pay rent, and buy food/drink. In almost every fort it completely borked otherwise smooth operations, and the only way to prevent it from instantly turning half of your dwarves homeless was to intentionally make shitty rooms so that your lower-skill laborours could make rent.
Toady cut it out of the game because it sucked.
The DF economy fell apart because dwarves spent all their time moving currency around. It didn't even have time to fall apart due to the flaws of capitalism.
Actually, the flaws in the dwarven economy are kind of like blockchain.
you're not wrong, but I like the retelling that implies that the experience of trying to simulate a capitalist economy radicalized the developer.
Gamedevs in my experience are far more likely to be decent people than players are, I think it's just whatever drives people to do artistic stuff in the first place. Even among audiences it's really AAA players that are shit, indie audiences tend to be a bit better.
Game devs are probably the most exploited ppl in the software industry. (maybe tied with startups) I wouldn't be surprised if they have a bit more class consciousness.
Hell yeah!
I still massively struggle to play the game though lmao
You should keep your eyes on the Steam Edition, which is coming down the pike. It's the same game, but with a completely reworked frontend to make it more approachable.
Ahh awesome, I'll definitely pick that up when it drops
Based shit. Gotta sit down and try this game out some day.
There are video games and then there's Dwarf Fortress. It uses the most vivid world simulation possible to give you that sense of endless wonder that Minecraft did. Only instead of saying "Here's this world, what will you build?" it asks "what's the worst thing you could build?"
Turns out I can always build something worse. I can chain leprechauns to the floor and maul them with dogs in my child dormitory so the kids get a safe exposure to death and are trauma-hardened soldiers by age 12. Mere video games don't let you do that.
I still remember watching a video a while back where he talked about the game and mentioned how he added eyelids into the game so dwarves weren't literally washing their eyeballs, or how he had to fix an issue that was causing cats to die in taverns from alcohol poisoning. It's crazy how much there is in that game; I've never played it but I've always wanted to (and yes, I am indeed waiting for the steam release so I can have a relatively easier to use UI).
he had to fix an issue that was causing cats to die in taverns from alcohol poisoning
For anyone unaware: dwarves sometimes get into drunk fights in taverns, spilling booze on the floor. Cats would walk over the alcohol and then lick their feet to clean themselves... then they'd get drunk, start puking uncontrollably and die.
That level of detail and interactions between details is what really makes the game brilliant. The world feels genuinely alive and you can never tell where the danger will ultimately come from or what it will entail.
One little detail I love about that game is that if someone masters a combat skill, they automatically become an alcoholic.
The implication of course being anyone who has seen enough combat to be a master at it has seen some shit and needs alcohol to cope.
while the free version is great there is a steam version pending that should have some rimworld-esque graphics and an actual UI. the free version was too much like playing a game on the scan gun i use at work (as in ancient, pre-DOS mess). i love it to death though.
i grew up on them but DF is something...different. the UI is really, really weird. it changes keys for basic functions in nearly every menu. once you memorize it, however, it's great and i'm sure you would enjoy it. it's not even the graphics i'm waiting for but the UI overhaul.
I thought G*mers would hate Israel, just for the wrong reasons. In any case, It’s not out yet on Steam so they’ll probably forget about it.
His other game that I really loved was Liberal Crime Squad where the enemy is the right wing. It was like a lumpen uprising simulator that had no sense of class consciousness to it. I figured he was like a left-liberal or something. This is refreshing confirmation that he's the goodest programmer.
aw shit that game was great fun. Kidnapping cops and brainwashing them into flag-burning revolutionaries, holding cable news anchor hostage on live TV, so funny. I might need to download it again and try that fancy mod with ecology and illuminati and stuff.
Oh shit, I didn't think to check for mods. I always wished it got a sequel or something so that's the next best thing. It's such a good idea for a simulator and just needed dedicated development.
It's called Terra Vitae or something, the one I was talking about. I think that's the biggest and best one that's been developed
Knowing Reddit, the comments were probably overrun with Zionists and enlightened centrists who took the opportunity to explain the nuances of racist lynch mobs and bombing critical civilian infrastructure.
They should have just selectively removed the reactionary stuff and banned them, but instead they took the easy way out.
He posted about BLM stuff and linked to some police abolition groups last summer.
Oh shit does this mean it's bad to do apartheid and genocide to elves
Please, please keep to the US and Israel. Don't try that Notepad+ shit.
How do I give my money directly to Hezbollah so they get off their ass or the Iran nuclear bomb fund?
