I never understood why xcom coded so many things as morally ambiguous. Like they constantly ask if it's worth it and the answer is always "YES AND ALSO THIS TECHNOLOGY WILL IMPROVE BILLIONS OF LIVES".
It'd have been cooler if they saved those questions and the more dehumanizing designs for xcom 2.
There's actually some interesting potential when it comes to the political ramifications behind XCOM. Like how much control should it exert over local governments and the planet as a whole to combat the aliens, becoming a global military junta in the process. Sadly, that's a missed opportunity and we got the lame obligatory "moral ambiguity" you described.

The weapons aren't for them, it's for the "Alien Collaborators" here on earth

ADVENT is truly the people's shield against reactionary terrorism waged by XCOM.

iron pellet go: crack
intergalactic xenogravitron dark-energy cannon go: WUBWUBWUBWUB VROOOOMSHAVSHAKXBDHA (sort of sounds like dubstep)
No civilization advanced enough to master interstellar travel would tolerate dubstep
Just like all other modern wars, the goal is not to win, but to make money for defense contractors.
