The bad rap they get comes entirely from shit writers trying to make something unique who can't get past the "what if this thing were the complete opposite?" stage of writing. Evil and bad clowns in media stem entirely from thinking "what if good thing were bad?", therefore they are good.
I'm pretty sure the clown problem exists not because some hack frauds tried subversion but because clowns exist entirely within the uncanny valley. I'm very sure actual clowns are exactly the sort of good hearted weirdos I love and would hang out with but the whole shtick creeps me out something fierce.
