There's a really good account of the Diné (Navajo) perspective of it in Blood and Thunder - An Epic of the American West, by Hampton Sides. Maybe not commensurate with writing an essay, but still a great read.
Also not sure if you already know this but there are search tools that might help, like including "-sterilization" would exclude all results that have the word sterilization.
