-They have been salivating over the idea of moving far enough "to the center" aka right that they get a big enough chunk of Republicans that they can rule forever. That means more business for their top lobbyists, more corporate donations to the top officials and members, etc. This would also importantly entirely lock out even minor soc-dem reformists in the name of "sensible" neo-liberal politics that aren't quite as brutal as Republicans would like but do enough to favor the rich and gut and welfare that the capitalists won't mind unless they're personally brain poisoned by being an Evangelical or something similar and just have to have a culture war.
