I asked a few months ago on advice on getting started with warhammer. Played my first game last night. Got most of my figurines on eBay and made the terrain out junk.
We did yeah. My opponent played the space marine start collecting box and missed a bunch of his abilities, and I accidentally gave my bloat drone a heavy blight launcher and a fleshmower so he got totally wrecked, but we started to get a better feel for the rules. Excited to try again.
Hmmm, so Warhammer 40k is like a toy set. I always thought it was a computer game.
It's a long-running tabletop war game. It's played using a person's collection of miniatures. Basically, you know how D&D can be played with miniatures, usually to enhance the experience and to add a visual element to help the players know what's going on? It's like that, except the entire game is played with those miniatures, and it revolves entirely around battles instead of roleplaying.
There have been many video game adaptations of various genres throughout the years, but the main thing is the tabletop game.
Theres also a ton of fiction written in the universe of the game which is optional but a lot of people like it.
I got about 600 points worth of guys for 150 dollars off of eBay, start collecting boxes are a similar value, but depending on the faction they can be an odd mix of units.
I haven't actually gotten around to painting yet. My wife is going to get me paint stuff for my anniversary present. Some of them are painted because they came that way off of eBay.
I feel you, I "haven't actually gotten around to painting" my Sisters army for about ten years.
I had a huge amount of fun. Building the terrain was half the fun honestly. I want to do an ork themed warzone with more trees next.
The game itself is frankly a bit complicated and my friend and I have been playing tabletop RPGs our whole life. If you are totally fresh to tabletop war games it's still going to be doable, but it will take a time investment to figure out the rules for sure.
If you find yourself on :reddit-logo:, head to Sigmarxism. It’s one of the few good things still there. Also, there are some great recast sites out there for a fraction of the price of legit new.
I haven’t played since I was a teenager without bills, but I like to think about it still.
I'm thinking about just getting a unit every two months or so. Like like 30 bucks a month investment. Buying a 2k army all at once is way too much for me.
I’ve already got a box of unpainted D&D minis I’ve been putting off painting for a couple of years, so I don’t think buying new minis is in my future.
Nice, I've been slowly inching my way towards the hobby. I enjoy the painting aspect so I've been content to slowly build up and paint my dudes until I have a decent sized force.
How hard was it to pick up on the rules? I have a friend who plays who's gonna teach me but I've never played a tabletop war game before.
I think if you have a friend that knows what they are doing it would be pretty easy to get into.
