So to come back to this, basically their biggest piece of evidence are these documents the ICIJ got their hands on.
I have to say I have an issue with their authentification process:
Their authenticity was confirmed by several leading experts, including James Mulvenon, vice-president of Defense Group Inc, Adrian Zenz, a senior fellow in China studies at the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation in Washington, D.C. and several intelligence sources who cannot be identified.
I think something smells fishy here.
You know who founded the group? James P. Wade, the name probably doesn't ring a bell, for me neither, but he has interesting opinions:
James P. Wade, Jr. is the author, with Harlan K. Ullman of the doctrine of strategic dominance, more popularly known as shock and awe. They published their concept in Shock and Awe: Achieving Rapid Dominance a 1996 monograph of the National Defense University.
The part with that British dude(Edit: after a closer look, no british dude, it's actually that Zenz guy starting at 7:03 min) talking about cameras on the street being super sinister couldn't be much more ironic.
as I type this, there are literally two ANPR cameras within roughly 500 yards of me
And the Five Eyes catch anything the cameras don't see, just in case.
I just had to check who it actually was that was talking during that segment(starting at 7:03 min), and I have to apologise, because of the BBC my mind went to British, when it was actually even that Zenz guy talking.
But who are you talking about?
I misread and thought you meant John Oliver because you said "British dude" :x
A good breakdown of why this is pretty much complete bullshit: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1287411708374454273.html
Breadtube is full of people who unironically call themselves "progressives". I spent some time there after chapo was banned and it's mostly radlibs. They mean well but I didn't feel welcome when I got downvoted for saying I wasn't voting for Biden. Also saw some lsrael defenders there I think, although might have been in LateStageCapitalism.
Reccomend dw news for Xinjiang coverage. It's funded solely by the German state, and every article they've done on the region has been from documents sent to them, or interviews conducted directly by them with former detainees.
That was surprisingly good. What is your criticism?
Oh, I forgot, China's party has "communist" in its name and therefore their crimes against humanity are justified, necessary and actually not that bad.
From citing "a million imprisoned" to stating that there is a policy of "cultural erasure" is a good starting point to say this is utilizing information derived from yellow-peril journalism at the very least; at the very worst it showcases Oliver being complicit in using propaganda for the purpose of manufacturing consent for aggression, militarily or otherwise, against China.
Which is sad because I think Oliver is funny af
that there is a policy of “cultural erasure”
But I would argue there is. Someone here posted this (to prove that there is nothing wrong with it), which clearly states that the intention is to re-educate them and that they are not allowed to leave or contact others (it informs students where they parents were disappeared to). They say that their ideologies are like a "disease" that the government has to cure, even if they don't feel "sick". Considering this targets people based on their ethnic group and separates families, to the extend that children are educated away from their family, preparing the next generation to be more pro-government and to speak Chinese, this is very clearly cultural erasure to me. Even if that wouldn't be the goal, this is still an incredible crime that should not be apologised.
“a million imprisoned”
That is what all estimates suggest. Not necessarily at once. Do you have any more reliable numbers?
What’s the other option? Don’t teach them the main language and cultural norms of the society they’re going to be living in for most of their lives
You can find ways to do this without forcing them assimilate by separating families and putting people in re-education camps.
Perhaps they go too far into the process, but learning to speak Chinese isn’t erasing anyone’s culture
They are defining muslim separatists as terrorists, and anyone in contact with them as potentially indoctrinated with extremist ideologies. We both know how vague these definitions always are and how easily it is exploited to target whoever you want. The Chinese government is presenting themselves as the saviours of the people, freeing them from the evil "terrorist indoctrination" without ever defining what this actually means, comparing it to disease that they need treatment for (inside their camps) until they are "cured" and are allowed to go home and talk to their families again. Considering how many people are apparently affected by this "disease", it will result in a very different life in their communities, and as a result alter or (partly) erase their culture. The Chinese government never liked religions as they lead to their member being committed to their god(s) over the government.
There was a BBC doc that tried to prove this and when they went in for a surprise visit, showed that the students were allowed to leave on the weekends so that claim is fictional.
Why are they handing out FAQs to students (living outside of Xinjiang) that explain where their parents are and under which conditions they will eventually be released? Is the woman (and her children) in the John Oliver video lying?
Q: “When will my family members be released?” (note: to be precise, the question asks when they can “graduate school”)
Answer: Once they complete all the necessary coursework while abiding by school rules. Meanwhile, the students whose family members are attending school should cooperate with the education process by following the law themselves, not spreading rumors, and participating in “collective activities” — which will facilitate their family members’ release.
Imma be real and say I simply don't have the time for this (I wish I did tho), but I felt I should respond to your initial posed question out of good faith as I am the detestable OP. I hereby summon the corpse of Mao to fight you for trial by combat, may Chapo have mercy on your soul.
I would show Mao how their country is led and Xi Jinping would pull all aggro.
i have to say that this matter is not black and white, as it had pointed out U/CoralMarks is something to be cautious enought;nevetheless there is a thing going on about the uighurs. As i have seen in this talk , there has been a huge increase in religion there, this has cause suspiction from the goverment that could cause some means of insurrection in the sense of a teocratic goverment. The respond to this has been the surveillance state, and the introduction of reeducation camps in which they teach chinese and culture of china, after that the get him a job doing this while making cultural erasure little by little. The talk also shed some light on other causes such as the financial interest from tech companies there to provide equipment,Cities improving their surveillance systems becasue of the large grants the central state gives to those cities that complies. The methods are not the best but are far from the worsts.Really recomend the talk.
