It's not impossible for the courier to have come across communist stuff at some point seeing as how China occupied several American cities at one point.
I'm just saying that in universe there are avenues by which your character could have been exposed to socialism. Especially because China is explicitly communist in the game and occupied cities (thus leaving behind propaganda and such).
