I can't help but feel a little sus when it comes to Brace. I mean the dude traveled to the Middle East to fight in a proxy war which is enough to raise red flags for me.
If this part of his life story is true though, then I genuinely feel bad for the guy:

Maybe I know more kids with ADD and ptsd who got hooked on drugs but brace behavior seems textbook to me. Shit, he probably saw more comrades die from heroin here than in the war
