A kid was hurt by these cyanide mines and it also killed his dog https://amp.idahostatesman.com/news/local/environment/article217956755.html

Reading this I figured "must be some fucked up thing they're recently trying in a single state" but holy fuck, they've been in use since the 1930s - and the previous version at least has killed many people. And the new version has injured at least one kid and killed tens of pets.

Australia is apparently now using them too. It is, indeed, completely insane.

The ones in Australia don't use cyanide.

They're loaded with 1080, a poison which is far more lethal to invasive species than indigenous ones at a dosage that is sublethal to humans.

This is insane and easily the worst way someone could have come up with to kill coyotes. WTF America.

I'm not for killing coyotes or any wild animals, but a non-selective trap that's a danger to the public? WTF@!@

Just declare coyote a pest animal and open season every year until the reduction number was met, plenty of hunters out there would do it much more safely.

Have more guns than anyone knows what to do with

Use cyanide booby traps instead of guns to kill coyotes

But then you'd have the ranchers worrying about having their livestock accidentally shot or irritated by the hunters roaming around.

I'm pretty sure the goal is to have few to no humans needing to be involved in the management of larger and larger areas of land and larger and larger herds of livestock.

Even guardian dogs would be viewed negatively as there's another living thing that 1) needs to be taken care of and 2) does what all living things do (which is its own thing) that might not sync up with the rancher's goals.

Maybe, just maybe, we wouldn't have this and other problems if we got away from something as wasteful as cattle ranching?

This just blows my mind they think THIS is the solution. The signs they put up definitely won't last as long as docile mines planted everywhere.

I thought we were crazy over in Norway shooting every last wolf in the country, but never have I heard about chemical warfare against predators, what the hell.
