What was explained to me: Guyana and Venezuela both have claimed the territory for 123 years or so, both have legal claims that are probably legally valid under their own legal regime. (Guyana was part of the UK then, I suppose.) The disputed territory is 67% of Guyana (😱). There's a Venezuelan referendum today (the 3rd) about whether to annex that, but it's unclear if that will have an effect. Claiming the territory also means claiming its offshore bits, where oil was recently discovered. Great Satan will back Guyana, possibly militarily, to keep that oil open to its corporations.
Maduro is doing this to gain support and national unity after he didnt rise th minimun wage like the workers wanted and later he tried to purge the leadership of the communist party of Venezuela for siding with the workers, here is the CPV take on the esquibo issue if you want to read it (its in spanish)
Venezuela wont invade, Maduro will move troops to the frontier but the reason will be to try to look strong instead of an invasion, he wont invade not because he would lose but because the war would isolate venezuela from the rest of the region. i think the Plan is to ride on the nationalist fevor to gain support and votes for the presidential election next year.
Also all the act scares Guyana into not going for the Oil in esquibo for a bit which is good for the venezuelan claims.

Another huge chunk of Guyana is actually Suriname. Check out the Tigri Area. Guyana is not a legitimate state.
