I believe Ulster used to be the most radically opposed to Britain province so Brits just completely colonized it and basically had catholics resistants massacred and replaced with protestants, hence why the North ended up voting to remain

Northern Ireland had the whole revolution done for them and decided not to self determine because it might entail civil rights reforms.
