It literally starts with the entire human race being kidnapped and moved to “Happy Humans Town”, which is somewhere in between an internment camp and a modern reservation with a sci-fi twist. The Boov are referred to “settlers” and their culture is basically everything wrong with yanqi culture in a kid-friendly package. I just said “we did that to the native Americans” and my kid was super shocked.
The main character is also one of the first black protagonist in a mainstream animated film (beat by a few years by Princess And The Frog) and she’s an immigrant from Barbados. I’d love some counterexamples, but I couldn’t find any. Makes me think of how liberals have coopted the Bechtel test as an arbiter of whether or not a movie is #feminist or not when the whole point is that movies that pass it ought to be commonplace by default, but it’s actually super rare.
Honestly all this aside it’s also just a great movie.
