It was an obviously manufactured claim written in order to support their bill for harsher punishments for shoplifting (and likely hide some profit loss in a fake theft tax writeoff). It would be nice to hear if it failed in its purpose now that the lie is exposed but we'll see
So they're gonna take the laundry detergent and underpants out of the locked glass cases right?
They claimed it was organized? And people bought that? I can see how a narrative of an uptick could be believed, but organized shoplifting gangs?
shit the vast majority of my shrink in my dept that i am happily quitting soon is from the insane price increases causing us to donate like 50-60% of everything that comes through, plus shitty packaging and quality control (which is getting worse likely due to overworking manufacturers because i'm sure they are getting just as overworked as we are).
instead of increased theft mostly i just see more people taking markdown stickers off and moving them to fresh items. this is just because i basically have to markdown everything to even sell it before it hits dates.
so yeah greed and capitalism. lower your fucking prices and maybe you'll sell something. but you won't.
