All the books on cuban history I can find are CIA ass bullshit.
I haven't read them yet, but Cosmonaut's podcast discussed Helen Yaffe's book Che Guevara: The Economics of Revolution and then interviewed her about her new book We Are Cuba, and they both seemed pretty interesting. The first is about Guevara's economic thought and the debates in Cuba in the 1960s about how to build socialism, and the second is a post-Soviet history of Cuba.
It's pretty amazing how they managed to get me feeling anxious about stuff that I know the history of, like the missile crisis for instance. 10/10 would recommend, in fact:
Can’t recommend a book, but Gloria Estefan and Lin Manuel Miranda are writing an animated musical about liberating Cuba
If you're looking for a Cuban history of Cuba it's hard to recommend My Life, Fidel Castro's autobiography, strongly enough.
Here's a download link.
These are on my list haven't gotten around to them yet:
People's Power: Cuba's Experience with Representative Government, Peter Roman
Cuba and Its Neighbors: Democracy in Motion, Arnold August
