Because reddit mods are alienated dorks who need that sweet sweet internet power to feel like they have any semblance of control over their lives. Also a lot of them are spooks or otherwise astroturfing.

yeah and that's just what we know about, I'd wager there are at least a few reddit mods who have made some serious money controlling discussion but y'know. tinfoil hat n' all.

The alternative is that the queue is flooded with absolute trash. Memes need to be sequestered or that's all a subreddit will devolve into. Questions, it tends to be the same few questions asked ad nauseum, and that will turn regular users away. There's an argument to be made for disallowing short comments that tend to be bad one-liners and thoughtless comments.

Reddit is the memory hole where ideas go to die, but also to be never ever forgotten in case the security apparatus needs them.

You're not, the decisions lately the has been making are so foolish it makes you wonder if its not done on purpose at times. I made a throw away to ask some question to find a rare song, had to karma farm to do it. I hate how nearly every sub is behind like 100 pts, so I have to hit up askreddit, read a bunch of reactionary horseshit and post nonsense, moreso than usual that is.

I used to do this to scam nerd ass loan sharks who had crazy rates on /r/borrow back when I was a mid twenties drunkard.

First time I've admitted this behavior.

Yeah my local subreddit just shadowbans any comments from anyone newer than like 2 years. I had to contact the mod team to get approval to ask a question about city-wide waste collection a few months back.

Reddit has reached the stage where they are more concerned about shaping discourse than they are attracting new members. So any new account has a MISERABLE user experience. Many subs will auto delete your comments (either openly or via "shadowban" automoderator deletections)

Almost everything on reddit's frontpage has been chosen by powermods, as they delete things they don't like that organically hit it in favor of what they want (see: https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditMinusMods/)

The biggest problem is that reddit ingeniously continues to trickle out chud community bans (rather than, ya know, just fucking banning them and their members as they pop up) to keep a trickle of reactionaries seeding reddit alternatives at all times. So you never have another option.
