I feel like "at least i..." is the result of years of bosses telling their employees, "you think you got it bad? let me tell you about people i will never meet let alone do anything to alleviate their suffering yet i will feign compassion so you will think that I somehow used it all up caring about this faceless crowd in another country or something" it's a pretty effective way to prevent people from advocating for themselves.

depending on how you feel about the job/boss, it might be fun to see what happens if you ask them what they are doing for the group of people they just used as a prop.
