So I haven't read the manga or watched the anime but I watched the live action and was wondering, was Arlong kinda coded black revolutionary in the manga too?

I'm far enough into the manga to answer this! He came across as more of a "superior race to replace mankind" kinda dude to me, though I didn't read it in my native language

        Definitely more like this.

        Manga/Anime spoiler

This is addressed more fully during the Fishman Island arc, which I just got done watching. It's one of the weirder arcs, politically speaking. Prior to the arc it has been well established that Fishman are considered inferior beings. During the FI arc there is a group that are pretty much presented as "reverse racists" who draw inspiration from Arlong and "hate humans for no reason" even though there is a clearly established history of humans enslaving Fish/Mer people and treating them as lesser people, including a flashback during the grand reveal that they had no root cause for their hatred of humans.

Gotcha. Obviously the dude is problematic, but it felt like they were also trying to mix some Malcom X in there and I wasn't familiar enough with the world to know if it was another case of give the bad guy some leftist takes so we can point at them as being bad.
