Real question: does China's censorship outright ban anything? Like, you can just get around it easily with a VPN, no? Really feels like western outlets saying china is "censoring" xyz are hugely overstating how impactful it is, unless I'm totally misreading the VPN situation over there

I visited China circa 2011 and could easily access whatever I wanted outside the firewall with a basic VPN. Could have changed since then, but it wasn't an issue for me at the time.

That's basically exactly what is like.
