Detective Pikachu was alright, they just need to use the Mario branding and take literally any random good script that wouldn't get funded otherwise and fit it in.
I feel like that's just becoming the norm now. All scripts are laundered through capeshit and existing IP because the corporate ghouls in charge are afraid of anything they don't have data on.
It's also just a bad concept to adapt for a movie. It's not really a series with much narratives
