I'm going to respectfully disagree, as someone who has lived in both the Midwest and CA. Yes, a large contingent of Californians have real shitty attitudes about the homeless. But there's also a lot of leftists - and yes, plenty of libs too - who actually see homelessness as a structural failure of society and should be resolved humanely.

Contrast that with my experiences in the Midwest, where everyone regardless of political affiliation only sees homelessness as a blight and personal failure of individuals; and they frankly wouldn't care one bit if homeless folks were rounded up and disappeared. Back in my old hometown, there is a man who runs a shelter that while problematic at points, at least tries to raise awareness of the issues homeless folks face in that town. He's seen as a pariah and public enemy #1 by conservatives and liberals alike there.

Homelessness is kinda like most issues vis-a-vis California vs the rest of the US: yeah lots of Californians have shitty attitudes about it but most other parts of the US are even worse. California isn't objectively "good" but contrast it with how hyper-reactionary most of the US is and it's materially better by comparison.
