M5-RFP, an organization born out of the June 5th protests against state repression, has whole-heartedly endorsed the military coup. They have the support of the military and are working to create a "National Committee for the Salvation of the People":
To pay tribute to the Malian people for their heroic struggle, the M5-RFP is holding a large patriotic rally on Friday, August 21, 2020 on the Place de l'Indépendance in Bamako.
The Malian people remain more than ever mobilized and determined until the crowning of their patriotic struggle for the restoration of a democratic, republican and secular Mali, endowed with responsible and virtuous governance. [1]
The president who was ousted, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, is a prototypical comprador bourgeoisie. He was trained in International Relations at the University of Paris. He then became a technical consultant for the European Development Fund, putting together the first small-scale development program for the European Union's aid activities in Mali. He went on to become Mali director for the French chapter of Terre des hommes, an international NGO "aiding children in the developing world." [2]
The coup was met with immediate, strong condemnation from France, America, the African Union, and the Economic Community of West African States on August 18th. [3]
China remained silent on the coup for two days. Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian addressed the coup when asked at a press briefing:
China is closely following the situation in Mali. We oppose the attempt to seek a change of power through force and other unusual means, and we support the pertinent regional and international organizations, especially the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States, in working for a peaceful settlement of the crisis in Mali.
