The post doesn't explicitly say the dad is homophobic, just that he "denies the atrocities of USSR or China" who he says were socially conservative to the point that they are "against gay rights".
I don't think I can affirm his position on gay rights one way or another from the original post. The OP criticizes "tankies," partly because he sees them supporting polities like the USSR and China which he says are against gay rights. Then later says his dad is a tankie.
So you see OP's dad, according to OP, doesn't support gay rights only in that he doesn't condemn the PRC and the USSR sufficiently for their perceived social conservatism. I'd like to take a moment and point out that while the USSR was being "against gay rights" until it imploded, we in the free US of A were letting them die of a mystery plague that we really couldn't be bothered to address or talk about. Thankfully, we later were able to finally elect a president to the Whitehouse who advocated for gay marriage in 2012 after the Supreme Court said that it was legal and politically it became safe to do so.
Now in his private time, I'm sure OP's dad is probably just closeted and into rough trade, much like your own.
Critical support for the homophobic tankie dad
I said critical, he should improve his homophobia.
How much more could he improve?
Back to zero.

So he's not against gay rights?

Ah cool, I just read it as him being homophobic
